Archaea differ from bacteria primarily in their cell wall composition and membrane lipid structure. Bacteria have peptidoglycan in their cell walls, while archaea do not; they may have pseudopeptidoglycan or other materials instead. Additionally, archaea have ether-linked lipids in their membranes, while bacteria have ester-linked fatty acids.
