Directions:
To complete this assignment, you will pull your analysis of "One of These Days" together to write an analytical paragraph to demonstrate your understanding of a theme in the story. You can choose either of the two themes (and their claims) that we have provided so that you can focus on selecting your three or four pieces of support, weaving them into your paragraph, and commenting on each.

Your paragraph needs to be at least eight sentences long and include:

* your claim sentence
* a minimum of three pieces of support from the text (any combination of characterization or plot)
* a sentence after each piece of support where you comment on how it supports your claim
* For at least one of these sentences, demonstrate your knowledge of how to use parallel structure by using it in the sentence
* a final thought that wraps up your argument

Not sure how to get started?
First, choose which theme you'd like to explore: either that sometimes even people with power are powerless, or that sometimes powerless people have power.
* Next, revisit the story, annotating characterizations or plot moments that connect to the theme you've chosen or reviewing the annotations you have already made.
* Then, craft your claim or use or tweak ours.
* Finally, draft your paragraph, starting with your claim, providing each of your three or four pieces of support with a sentence of commentary after each, and ending with a final thought.

In 'One of These Days,' Marquez illustrates how powerless individuals, like the dentist, can gain power over those in authority, such as the mayor. Through their interactions, the shifting power dynamics highlight that vulnerability can exist even in positions of authority. Ultimately, the story challenges our understanding of power in human relationships.
