What conditions must exist for a force to do work on an object?

Energy? whether it is kinetic or potential, force usually requires some sort of energy to do work

For a force to do work on an object, it must be applied, and there must be displacement in the direction of that force. The work done can be mathematically expressed as W = F ⋅ d ⋅ cos ( θ ) . Notably, if the force is perpendicular to the displacement, no work is done.
