Which solution has the largest concentration of ions?

Asked by NevaFadel

Answer (3)

It depends on the solution. For example, a 1M solution of MgCl2 has a greater concentration of ions than a 1M solution of NaCl because MgCl2 breaks apart into 3 ions while NaCl only breaks into 2 ions. On the other hand, a 12M solution of NaCl has a greater concentration of ions than a 1M solution of MgCl2 because the NaCl solution is simply so much more concentrated with NaCl than the MgCl2 solution is with MgCl2.

The concentration of **ions **depend on the number of ions which can be produced from a substance on dissociation.
What are ions?
An** ion** can be defined as an atom or a molecule which has a** net electrical charge. There are 2 types of ions which are present : 1) cation 2) anion . The cation is the positively charged ion and anion is the negatively charged ion .** As they have opposite charges which are present on them they attract each other which results in the formation of ionic bond.
Ions which consists of single atom are ** called mono-atomic ions** while which ions** consists of two or more ions are known as poly-atomic ions . They are created by chemical interactions . The ions are very reactive in their gaseous state and rapidly react with oppositely charged ions which results in the formation in neutral molecules. They are formed on dissolution **of salts in liquid substances or by passing **current **through the solution to generate ions.

The largest concentration of ions in a solution is determined by the total number of ions produced from each solute. For example, 1 M CaClâ‚‚ yields the highest ion concentration of 3 M, while 1 M NaCl yields 2 M. The concentration ultimately depends on the dissociation of the ionic compound in solution.
