The House of Representatives has the sole power to impeach federal officials, while the Senate conducts the impeachment trial and can convict or acquit the official. If the House votes to impeach, the Senate tries the case and requires a two-thirds vote for conviction. Examples include the impeachment trials of Bill Clinton and Andrew Johnson, both of whom were acquitted by the Senate.
