The main difference between high desert and low desert regions stems from their elevation, climate conditions, and the presence of different plant and animal life adapted to these environments. High deserts are usually found at higher elevations and tend to have cooler temperatures, whereas low deserts are at lower elevations and generally have higher temperatures. An example of a high desert would be the Great Basin Desert in the United States, marked by colder winters and even snowfall, whereas a low desert example is the Sonoran Desert, characterized by hot temperatures and sparse rainfall.
Deserts are often found on the leeward side of mountain ranges which create a rain shadow effect, preventing rainfall from reaching these areas and hence forming desert conditions. For instance, the leeward side of the mountain ranges in North America results in the formation of the Mojave and Sonoran deserts. Other factors influencing desert climates include high-pressure dry air descending at certain latitudes, as is common in subtropical deserts like the Sahara and the Namib.
Rainfall is a critical factor for desert ecosystems. Subtropical hot deserts may receive less than 30 cm (12 in) of rain annually, with some areas, such as parts of the Sahara, experiencing as little as 2 cm (0.8 in) of rain in a year. These conditions lead to extreme temperature variations, with soil surface temperatures in subtropical hot deserts soaring above 60°C (140°F) during the day and plummeting toward 0°C (32°F) at night. Cold deserts, in contrast, have high temperature fluctuations, with colder winters causing temperatures to drop below -30°C (-22°F).
High deserts are at higher elevations with cooler temperatures and can experience snow, unlike low deserts which are at lower elevations, have hotter temperatures, and feature unique plant life. Both types of deserts receive minimal rainfall, but their ecological characteristics differ significantly due to these factors.
