The Sumerian writing system, known as cuneiform, originated around 3000 BCE as pictographs for record-keeping and evolved into a complex script used for various purposes, including literature and legal documents. It was widely adapted by neighboring cultures, allowing it to become a major written language in ancient Mesopotamia until its decline around the first century CE due to the rise of alphabetic scripts. Cuneiform represents a significant milestone in the history of writing and civilization.
