How did the colonists define their citizenship in the early 1700s?

They were citizens of whichever country they originated from, under British rule. If they were born here, they were British citizens, as they were born in a British colony.

There are 13 colonies considered very important until they became independent were colonies of England over the United States. All the colonies had similarities in the political and legal systems. The settlers made requests for protection of their rights as English.

In the early 1700s, colonists considered themselves British subjects entitled to the rights and privileges of British citizens. This belief was rooted in their political and civil rights as part of the British Empire, although feelings of inequality began to emerge. By the time of the American Revolution, many colonists started to identify as Americans rather than exclusively as British subjects.
