An ecosystem is in balance when it exhibits high biodiversity, stable food webs, balanced predator-prey ratios, effective nutrient cycling, and strong resistance and resilience to disturbances. The quality of water and atmospheric gases also contributes to its overall health. Monitoring these factors helps determine the equilibrium state of the ecosystem.
