I believe the answer is: The colonists killed a Powhatan leader and the Powhatan's attacked back.
But in settlers community, they framed it as if the native indians were somehow crude and agressive toward their millitary personels. This led to the millitary action made by the settlers which later known as the Indian Massacre of 1622 that occured in Virginia colony.

The Jamestown settlers and the Powhatan Confederacy experienced escalating conflict due to territorial encroachment, cultural misunderstandings, and violent confrontations, particularly after the surprise attack led by Opechancanough in 1622. The conflicts continued through multiple wars, resulting in significant casualties and loss for both sides. Ultimately, these actions led to a long-term decline in Powhatan power and territory.
