Central America is designated as an isthmus because it is a narrow land connection between North and South America, separating the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. The Isthmus of Panama is particularly notable for being the narrowest part of this region. Its geographical features and historical significance reinforce its classification as an isthmus.
