Provide a nonexample of a ratio.

Answer (3)

Ratios are used within Mathematics. A ratio is simply the relationship between two numbers, it indicates how many times the first number contains the second number. An example of a ratio is that you have 2 flashlights and 5 batteries. To compare the ratio between the flashlights and the batteries we divide the set of flashlights with the set of batteries. The ratio is 2 to 5 or 2:5 or 2/5. Whereas a non-example of ratios is simply not putting the correct numbers in the correct arrangement. An example of this would be; Mario had 9 marbles and Stacy had 14 marbles what is the ratio to the number of marbles of Mario to Stacy.
example of ratio: 9:14 or 9/14 or 9 to 14
non-examples of a ratio: 2:19 or 2/19 or 2 to 19

A non-example for a ratio would be a single number or quantity without a comparison to another quantity. In a ratio, two quantities are compared or expressed in relation to each other.
If there is no comparison or relation to another quantity, it does not fit the definition of a ratio.
For example:

"There are 5 apples." This is not a ratio because it only provides the quantity of apples without any comparison to another quantity.

"The temperature is** 80 degrees Fahrenheit**." This is also not a ratio as it only gives a single value without any comparison to another value.

A ratio would require a statement like "There are 5 apples for every 2 oranges" or "The temperature is 80 degrees Fahrenheit to 30 degrees Celsius," where two quantities are related to each other in some meaningful way.

A nonexample of a ratio is any expression of relationship that misrepresents quantities or lacks context. For instance, stating a ratio of 5:5 when comparing different items (like dogs and cats) is not proper. Additionally, presenting numbers without context, like 2:3, without specifying what is being compared, also constitutes a nonexample.
