A direct object answers the question what? or whom? So in this case, "Grandma" is the subject, "gave" is the verb. What did grandma give? The answer will be your direct object.

A predicate nominative is a word that stands for the subject. Sometimes it helps me to think of it as a word that could almost replace the subject. So in this example, the "dog" is the subject and Siberian Husky is a word that stands for the subject and could almost replace the word dog. So this would be a predicate nominative.

In the first sentence, the word "dog" is a direct object because it answers the question of what was given. In the second sentence, the phrase "Siberian Husky" is a predicate nominative because it describes what the subject is. Therefore, the correct answers are D for the first question and D for the second question.
