The cotton gin, invented by Eli Whitney in 1793, revolutionized agriculture in the Southern United States by making cotton production faster and more profitable. It enabled the efficient processing of short staple cotton, leading to a dramatic increase in production and establishing cotton as the dominant cash crop in the South. This shift had significant economic implications and contributed to the reliance on enslaved labor in the region.
